Chapter 7
After leaving the Maria de la Vega clinic, Tyesha and Lily shared a Lyft heading downtown. Tyesha was going home to Brooklyn, but it was easy to drop Lily off at the One-Eyed King.
âYes, girl,â Tyesha was saying. âWoof just got back from Atlanta tonight. Your girl is âbout to, what? Get. Some.â
âThat reminds me,â Lily said. âI might call this new girl I met the other night.â
âWhat new girl?â Tyesha asked.
âI gotta get to work,â Lily said. âIâll call you later with all the details.â
As they pulled up in front of the strip club, Tyesha was grinning in anticipation of a night with her man and catching up on all the juicy details of Lilyâs sex life. The Lyft driver pulled up in front of the club.
But the grin on Tyeshaâs face abruptly dropped when saw Jimmy and his pale friend striding up to the clubâs entrance.
She grabbed Lilyâs arm. âHold up. You see that guy? Not the pale one, the big Latino guy? Heâs really dangerous.â
âTell me about it,â Lily said.
They kept their voices low, but the driver appeared to be listening to the 80s anthem rock he was playing.
âYou should tell the folks at the door not to let Jimmy in,â Tyesha insisted.
âWe donât have a choice,â Lily said. âHeâs our investor.â
âOh shit!â Tyesha said, totally shook. âJimmy Rios is the investor? Heâs more than just basic bad news. His brother was a vicious pimp. Heâoh fuck. Lily, you canât owe anything to a guy like that.â
âThatâs what Iâve been telling you,â Lily said.
âI think I know someone who can help,â Tyesha said.
âThatâs how we got into this mess in the first place,â Lily complained. âGiselle said, âI know a guy.ââ
âYeah, well I know a woman,â Tyesha said.
âIâd definitely rather owe a woman than this badjohn,â Lily said. âWeâre doing everything we can to pay him faster.â
âIâll see if I can get some funds for you tonight,â Tyesha said.
âWe still owe him twenty thousand,â Lily said.
âFuck!â Tyesha said. âTwenty thousand? Iâll let you know. But be careful around him.â
âI will,â Lily said, and opened the car door.
As Lily stepped out of the Lyft, Tyesha turned to the driver. âIâm changing the second destination. Weâre going back to the Lower East Side.â
She texted her boyfriend that she was going to be late.

When Lily got into the club, Jimmy was buying a round of drinks for three friends, including the ghostly guy.
She put on a bikini top and booty shorts, then had a string of clients who kept her tied up in the champagne room. Lily didnât see Jimmy again til a few hours later, after he had clearly had lots of alcohol.
âYou see this?â he said, pulling a paper out of his pocket. âThis is a promissory motherfucking note. Says these bitches owe me thirty thousand dollars. Thatâs right. I can afford to loan out thirty motherfucking thousand.â
âI thought Hector was the only guy in the Bronx loaning out money like that,â one of the guys said.
